Shriner’s Children Hospital

Shriner’s Children Hospital

Scope and Impact

Shriners Hospital for Children is a regional pediatric medical center that provides highly specialized care and rehabilitation to children with complex medical issues regardless of the families’ ability to pay. The Northern California center located in Sacramento provides free and exceptional care to children who have orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, cleft lip, scars from any cause, need for specialized plastic surgery and other complex surgical needs. Shriners is funded solely by private donations and driven by excellence in treatment, teaching and research.

Through this project, we will collect toys and educational materials for babies and toddlers, as well as for older children. We will focus on collecting all the items on the “urgently needed” list provided by the Child Life/Therapeutic Recreation and School Manager at the hospital. Items we will donate will be used for the holidays as well as birthdays, therapy patients, and for the hospital school. Therefore, we expect the donation to make a significant impact on the lives of many patients at Shriner’s Hospital for Children.

Duration

One-time donation each year

Success Criteria

We will deem this project successful when we are able to collect enough supplies for at least 20 children. We also aim to collect all items on the “urgently needed” list and will use HBB funds to purchase any items on the list that are not received through donation.

Cost

$500 each year

Progress Update

Long-term patients have to spend birthdays and special holidays away from loved ones. Teams of specialists work with patients to help normalize their hospital experience through distraction, play and other techniques. In 2016 and 2017, with the help of  our community youth, HBB organized donation drives to collect much needed items, such as art supplies, books, gift cards, etc to help in the healing process. For 2016, We estimated the total value of all donations to be over $1000 , including $210 in cash and gift cards. A total of $500 was used from HBB funds in 2016 visit. In 2017, we also donated approx $500 worth of toys and gift cards
