Rabies
A one-day camp on human and animal rabies and a One Health program in Bangladesh
Scope and Impact
This project aims to raise awareness of rabies and prevention through lectures and the distribution of awareness materials. The goal of the project is to prevent the thousands of rabies deaths that occur every year.
Duration
Periodic and long term
Cost
$500
Part II
In this phase, we aim to implement awareness-building programs in educational institutions for the prevention and control of rabies in animals and humans. Educational institutes (high schools and colleges) will be selected from the Gazipur district, located adjacent to Bangladesh’s capital city of Dhaka.
The proposed program is a short term “pilot project” consisting of two high schools and a college. Two master trainers (one male and one female) will receive the proper awareness training. Then, the master trainers will select trainer students (five boys and five girls) from five classes of the selected school and provide them with “training of the trainer”, or TOT. After receiving TOT, the trainer students will develop the training “Road Map” for the program. They will provide training to target group students for awareness building on rabies, including its sources, symptoms, transmission routes, prevention and treatment measures, and control tools. Target group students will take pre-KAP (knowledge, attitude, and practice) and post-KAP tests to assess their knowledge before and after training. The trained group of students will then be able to disseminate their knowledge to family members, neighbors, and others.
In addition, one Project Director (PD) will be selected. The PD will be responsible for planning, coordinating and executing the program and will manage the training program schedule and module. The PD will also conduct advocacy meetings with the students and teachers of selected schools. Furthermore, the PD will take part in an assessment of pre-KAP and post-KAP capacity development. As such, the PD will visit the selected schools regularly to assess the progress of the program and formulate plans for program improvements. Lastly, the PD will prepare the final report on the program after its completion.
Scope and Impact
The ultimate objective of the program is the prevention and elimination of human and animal deaths due to rabies. In working towards this goal, we aim to produce a trained group of rabies prevention advocates who will spread information to the general population on rabies prevention and treatment. The program may reflect a positive impact on poverty reduction as well by preventing rabies exposure in livestock, which is a valuable asset for many people.
Success Criteria
Our objective is to make students capable of proper medical care with modern tools and technology for disease control and prevention and to have students convey their knowledge to others. By successfully implementing the program, HBB hopes to set up a model and motivate other governmental and non-governmental organizations throughout the country to increase awareness of rabies and other diseases.
