Description: The project aims to help about 300 families for 1 month worth of basic food supply during the upcoming Ramadan in this pandemic crisis. This project will select families who are at the risk of starvation or are in a state of starvation due to COVID-19 crisis restrictions on their lives who live from hand to mouth. This project is a part of greater HBB Phase II COVID-19 victim relief projects in different locations of Bangladesh. This project focuses identified needy poor families in Dhaka city including slums and one or more of its adjacent high density suburb areas such Pubail, Mirer Bazar, Kaliganj or nearby area. Dry, basic uncooked food items for a week worth for a typical family of 4 will be packed and distributed with the help of available volunteers including students from Bangladesh University (BU) and also in collaboration with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Due to lock down situation in Dhaka and surrounding areas because of COVID-19 current situation, DMP help will be needed for safe transport and distribution of the items. Our HBB project coordinator Tina Jabeen will coordinate with DMP for this purpose. At times we may have to use contract transport service if situation changes.
Scope and Impact: Underprivileged families who are affected by COVID-19 situation and who also experienced loss of income and face starvation risk will be considered to receive the HBB food relief help. Due to mandatory home-stay and social distancing requirements, people have been unable to go to find work. Many lost their jobs or pay since factories and most businesses are closed. The urban poor, who live off their daily wages have been hit the most, with no savings for routine health care or emergency medical crisis, and little ability to pay for housing and basic needs. The economic shock has brought the country into food insecurity. Families have been forced to skip meals due to the feared dire situation ahead for the uncertain severity of economic consequences of COVID-19 effect. The obvious need is to feed the less fortunate through food assistance.
Project Cost: Depending on the size of a family and requirements, each family will receive a packages containing following package for 7 days: 5kg rice, 1kg lentil, 2kg potato, 1L cooking oil, 1kg salt, 1kg onion, 2pc soap and packing=BD TK640. At this rate 1 full month (30 days) cost per family =TK2,743. Therefore estimated cost for feeding 300 families for one full month is Tk 822,900. (@Tk85 =9,681USD) plus transportation/misc. (~$200). Approximate grand total for the project=$9,881.
Project Duration: One month, approximate time, May 01- May 31, 2020.
How it aligns with HBB mission: The project aligns with the mission of HBB as the beneficiaries are only the underprivileged individuals and their communities. The project provides relief from food insecurity resulting from COVID-19 related loss of income of the less fortunate people. This relief is a necessary step for thriving towards empowering marginalized communities and help them achieve economic independence overcoming this crisis time .
Success Criteria/Sustainability: The beneficiary families will survive this extreme challenged time from obvious starvation. With this efforts, these families will not have to skip meals, at least for this one moth duration which is reasonable time to plan to generate income. The cost to serve one family will be about $8-9 per week. A report will be submitted at the end of the project.
