Description: | SABAA is initiating a fund drive in this unprecedented crisis to help feed COVID-19 victims in Bangladesh. The project named “COVID-19 Hardship Relief” would help 500 families for one week in two villages: Hatibandha Village in Shakhipur Upazila, Tangail District and Kallah Village in Sherpur Upazila, Bogra District. SABAA is bringing this fund drive to collaborate with HBB where SABAA aims to raise $2,000 for this project. With the target budget for the project being $3,000, SABAA anticipates HBB to contribute the remaining $1,000 from their available funds in order for the project to go ahead. |
Scope and Impact: | Individuals exposed to COVID- 19 have been unable to work due to illness or quarantines. Individuals not directly affected by COVID-19 have also experienced loss of income. Due to social distancing requirements, people have been unable to find work. The urban poor, who live off their daily wages have been hit the most, with no savings for routine health care or emergency medical crisis, and little ability to pay for housing and basic needs. The economic shock has brought the country into food insecurity. According to World Bank data, only 15% of Bangladesh’s population makes more than $6 a day. Families have been forced to skip meals and are starving. The call of the hour is to help the less fortunate, in particular through food assistance. |
Project Cost: | • A typical family will receive one package. • One package has 8 kg rice, 2 kg lentil, 1 kg potatoes, 1/2 kg salt, 1/2 kg oil and 1 soap bar. • Cost to put together one package is approximately $6. • Total cost of the project = $3,000 = 500 families x $6 per package per family. • There is NO OVERHEAD COST. • SABAA volunteers will distribute the packages. |
Project Duration: | One-week time in the month of April 2020. |
How it aligns with HBB mission: | The project aligns with the mission of HBB because it helps underprivileged individuals and their communities. The project provides relief from food insecurity resulting from COVID-19 related loss of income. This relief is a necessary step towards empowering marginalized communities and help them achieve economic independence. |
Success Criteria/Sustainability: | Families will not have to skip meals during this project period. A report will be submitted at the end of the project, which will ensure that the target population was served as promised. |
